An Introduction to Optical Coatings

coatings are used to manipulate optical reflectance and transmittance of an optical component. Typical examples include optical layer: Antireflection coatings that reduce amount of light reflected at a specific wavelength or wavelength range, narrowband filters that allow only a certain window length wave to transmit and High Reflector Coatings, used in the production of mirrors. More specifically, custom optical lens coatings used broadband and v layer anti-reflection coating to optimize the results of the application. As broadband optical lens coatings Working in a large spectral range, generally, UV, visible or infrared, to reduce the reflectance and transmittance increase, while the coating layer V-Custom maximum optical efficiency at a specific wavelength.

Coatings are designed for a specific incident angle of light and a specific light polarization, such as S-polarized, the polarization P-polarized, or randomly. If a layer is designed for light in a zero degree angle of incidence, but is used with light at an angle of forty-five degrees of incidence, the coating will not perform in the transmission specifications stated and reflection. Just Thus, coatings are generally designed for random polarized light for the use of So P-polarized light with a coating designed for light polarized at random while most will fail to produce the specifications.

The coatings are created by depositing dielectric and metal materials such as SiO2, TiO2, or Al, in thin layers which are usually equal in thickness to a quarter wavelength of light used in the application. These thin films of alternating between layers of high refractive index and low refractive index, thereby inducing the effects of interference is necessary. Here are some definitions common terms used in the optical coatings industry:

Glass Thickness Control:

The frequency of oscillation of a quartz crystal decreases from 5 MHz, as coating materials are deposited on the glass. The crystal is placed in the center of the coating chamber and the thickness of the coating on the glass surface is used to calculate the thickness of the coating of the optics.

Material exhibiting high transmission (no absorption) across many wavelengths – from the UV through the visible wavelengths in the IR.

Optical Tracking:
Measurement a direct optical reflection by reflecting light off the lens and measuring the intensity of the reflected light. A similar procedure can be applied in transmission measurement. For certain applications, the optical tracking technique that yields more accurate control of thickness of glass.

Splash:
Material involuntarily expelled in the form of larger particles of the portion of coating material. These particles can be embedded in the substrate and defects on the surface.

Thin Film:
Any movie that produces constructive or destructive interference when light transmitted through, or reflected.

There is a wide of techniques used in the application of optical coatings. The three coating technologies most common applications are:

IBS: ion beam sputter. Cathodic process in which energetic ions produced by an ion cannon.

PVD: Physical Vapor Deposition. A coating material is heated so that evaporation condenses on the lens evaporates, leaving a film. coating material can be heated by an electron beam or heat obtained by electrical resistance.

Cathodic: energetic molecules coating material are created by smashing accelerated ions on a target of the coating material. The material bombed after a deposit is durable and stable optics. The accelerated ions are normally produced in an inert argon plasma.
