The vision is more important than know-how to achieve success goals
At the dawn of the new millennium, the then Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was faced with a dilemma. In less than two decades the country will exhaust their main source of income – oil. He needed a solution and needed it fast.
He decided to make Dubai the world's number one tourist destination in luxury and triple the number of tourists in May million per year to the tune of 15 million. This was not an entirely castles in the air. The Crown Prince had built the famous and only seven star hotel Burj al Arab and world-class golf courses and race – all quite remarkable especially given that half a century before had a modest market town built over a stream.
Helped Dubai is decorated with good weather almost all year and long stretches of soft sand beaches adorn the coastline. Only problem was that the coast was originally only 72 km long – certainly not enough to cover the huge influx of tourists expected the crown prince.
But here is the key to his vision. We are often encouraged to think big. Sheikh Mohammed does not think big. Think of MEGA proportions. His plan was to create an island paradise on the coast of Dubai, in the form of a palm. This artificial island would increase the shoreline by 56 km.
Nothing of this size or shape has never been done before and, to add challenge to the island mixed with the environment, he wanted the island to be constructed entirely of natural materials – sand and rock. Robert Berger 2000-2004 Project Manager, said,
"When I first heard of this project he did not think could be done. It's incredible ". And he added:" If God wanted us to an island to be built in the shape of a palm tree that have been built one. "
I smiled when I learned that because if you believe that God or its equivalent, exists in each and every one of us, maybe that's exactly what God was doing.
A draft this scale needs best engineers in the world. Some of them were in the Netherlands where Dutch engineers increased the land mass of the Netherlands through the recovery land by 35%.
Sheikh Mohammed states that Palm Island would only shock of the waves, especially those generated during winter storms when strong winds could sprout up to 56 km per hour and waves may be up to 2 meters high, the island should be protected by a breakwater. Furthermore, although Some scientists and politicians, for that matter, are still debating whether global warming was actually a real phenomenon, researchers from this project were the factoring into their equations to the extent that water levels would rise as a result of global warming. Nothing can be left to chance, once built the island needs to stay in place.
By chance, the Persian Gulf was the ideal place for this proposed structure. It is too shallow for the formation of huge waves that could engulf and swallow the island. The researchers calculated that the breakwater would have to be at least 3 feet above the waves and about 12 km long.
If thought the stakes were already high, they were about to get even higher. The developers wanted to start work on the Palm Jumeriah in front of all research was complete. Despite years of research and baseline studies had been done was still a risky endeavor. There were so many variables to this project and variables unknown at that.
If researchers were wrong the island could be literally swept away but the developers are working to tight schedules. They had to create an island of nowhere, the installation of your complete infrastructure (gas, electricity, water, roads, etc), while also building luxury villas, shops and hotels around the year 2006. Roger Berger said,
"This is perhaps the only place where something like this can be done. To have the vision and the courage to carry it out. "
Work on Phase 1 of the project began in August 2001 and then something happened that shook the world to its foundations – 9 / 11.
This was one of the unknown parameters that nobody could have prepared for. People do not want to travel travel period much less than the Middle East and suddenly the idea of building a luxury resort destination in Dubai seems almost absurd. Dubai itself to a standstill as fear and panic swept the world as the shock waves an earthquake.
Through it all, one man in particular, was calm and determined. I think the logic dictated that the trust would eventually restored confidence and if not win the day, the challenge would be. Sheikh Mohammed wanted to be ready when that time came, most developers had already invested millions dollars in this project. The project will continue. It was a bold move and wise.
Another challenge came from the need to build the breakwater and the island simultaneously. If the dam was completed ahead of the island, cut off access to the site. On the other hand, if the island went on the dam would then be exposed to the elements.
Team work here was not only desirable, it is absolutely crucial. The team of breakwater and the island team had to work together in total synchronicity and, given the magnitude and complexity of the project as well as daily changing parameters of the project say that this was not an easy undertaking was an understatement.
And did I mention that nothing like this had been done before? The engineers were all of impeccable pedigree having worked in some of the world's largest and projects more complex, as acclaimed Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok airport designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster, but the project on the island of Palm eclipsed them all. The Palm Jumeirah to create the state of the art technology was necessary.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) or, more precisely, systems differential global positioning (DGPS) is used to measure whether the island with its 17 leaves took shape as it should. The world is the first high-resolution satellite owned private Ikonos was used in this exercise. The satellite orbits the earth 14 times a day and is responsible for the great images that helped engineers to ensure that the placement of sand was measured with an accuracy of 1 cm and help capture the imagination of people around the world.
In fact, people were so excited with this project, which doubled its capacity from 60 to 120 thousand. Despite all the challenges, The Palm Jumeirah has risen dramatically from the sea is a triumph of engineering modern, visionary leadership, great teamwork and decision making sharp.
Some of you may be thinking: "The developers of this project had a lot of money and it was easy for them to conceptualize and create a project of this magnitude. "If you are, you are missing the point. You see that one might consider MEGA terms, anyone can have dreams MEGA.
I was reading a story about John Maclean, who was paralyzed after a traffic accident when was only 22 years – a minute a young athletic and fight alongside his life.
When he began his rehabilitation swam two strokes, and was so exhausted which had to be towed out of the pool therapy and take back to your room. He fell asleep before his head would hit the pillow. For Juan Maclean, making the two hits was a great achievement, but nothing compared to your goal – to swim the English Channel.
This was something that had never been done before by a wheelchair athlete wheels and is a feat of strength trying to healthy individuals, even relatively low. To have any chance of achieving this goal every day he had to stretch, push past the fatigue and neuromuscular development of new ways to persuade your body to accept his stubborn will. He also built a phenomenal team around – people who bought into his vision.
And so, in 1998 and less than two weeks after his first attempt, John Maclean, finally reached their goal and complete the grueling swim in the canal 12 hours and 55 minutes. This is just one of many impressive sports achievements.
So do not be afraid to dream big, really big. If you cling to your vision and each day is pushed a little further than you gone before, while continually adapt to their conscience and new conditions, you too can achieve the objectives of MEGA.
Their results, in contrast to The Palm Jumeirah, will not be visible from space, but a new star might be visible from Earth.

Visions $17.20 Although music for the harp has been composed in every imaginable style over the centuries, certain structures and ‘rules’ came into being that were largely obeyed by every self-respecting composer. But in the last century things changed and composers broke through the restrictions of the past.
